Signs you have a pregnant cat
How to Recognize If Your Cat is in Heat or Pregnant
Identifying Symptoms of Heat
Cats in heat or pregnant will show some similar signs, such as enlarged nipples and increased affection towards others. However, only a pregnant cat will be excessively vocal while rolling around on the floor. Cats in heat often exhibit a distinct posture with their backs arched and tails slightly shifted to the side.
Monitoring Eating Habits
A noticeable change in your cat’s eating habits can indicate pregnancy. Around three to four weeks into pregnancy, a cat may start vomiting regularly or refuse to eat. If your cat goes without eating for more than three days, consult your vet immediately. Keep in mind that not all pregnant cats will lose their appetite; some may actually eat more than usual.
Examining Nipples
Enlarged nipples can signal either pregnancy or that your cat is in heat. To confirm pregnancy, look for additional signs. Around 35 days into pregnancy, a cat’s nipples may become bright pink and could express a milky fluid.
Recognizing the ‘Burro’ Shape
To distinguish between a pregnant cat and one that is simply overweight, observe her body shape. From above, a pregnant cat’s abdomen will be noticeably distended, extending more than halfway from neck to tail. Viewed from the side, a pregnant cat will appear slightly swaybacked with a rounded, protruding belly. In contrast, an overweight cat will have a uniformly fat appearance, including the neck and legs.
Observing Nesting Behaviors
If your cat begins seeking out quiet, secluded spots like a closet or a corner and starts arranging blankets, towels, or straw, she may be preparing to give birth. If you notice this behavior, assist her by setting up a comfortable nesting area. Line a cardboard box with blankets or towels to create a cozy place for her to deliver her kittens.
